Salt Lake County is home to world-class museums, lively concerts, and amazing animals–all of which are supported through public funding. Read on to learn more about this unique community program and how it enhances the wonderful place we call home.
Who, What, and Where is ZAP?
Initiated by the Utah Legislature in 1993, the Zoo, Arts & Parks program allocates one penny from every $10 spent in sales tax within the county to fund a diverse array of nonprofit organizations. State code requires the tax to be reauthorized by voters once every ten years.
Since its inception almost thirty years ago, ZAP has gained increasing support over the decades. An impressive 79% of voters supported the tax for its fourth reauthorization in November, 2024, demonstrating a community-wide commitment to the arts and cultural sector. Over the next decade, it’s estimated that the ZAP tax will provide approximately $26 million annually for arts and cultural programming within Salt Lake County.
These funds support 244 entities, including museums, theaters, dance companies, cultural festivals, botanical gardens, and more. Additionally, 30% of the annual ZAP revenue bolsters Salt Lake County Parks and Recreation, ensuring the maintenance and operation of our cherished parks, recreational facilities, and open spaces.
Experiencing ZAP-Funded Attractions
The impact of the ZAP program is evident in many beloved institutions and events throughout the county. For instance, the Utah Museum of Fine Arts benefits from ZAP funding, enabling it to offer numerous free programs to residents, families, and students. Well-known organizations such as Ballet West, Tracy Aviary, and the Natural History Museum of Utah receive substantial support from ZAP. Smaller organizations (community theatres, choral groups, and folk dancing clubs) are also able to apply for grants to support their offerings of culturally enriching experiences.
