I’m Kayley Danielson, interior designer for Niche Homes. Today, we’re going to be talking about basement finishes.
CARPET
We have hardwood floors on the main floor and the second floor of the house, but running down the stairs, in both basement bedrooms and the recreation room in the basement, we are going to have carpet. Basements are cold, and carpet is an easy way to soften a basement and to give it a warmer, cozier feel.
I have selected a gray tight-weave looped carpet. The gray color and the tight-weave loop hold up to an active lifestyle. When the carpet pile gets too high, we start to see tread and footprints and wear much quicker. A tight weave in a basement is always a good choice.
PORCELAIN TILE
At this home, you walk out of the garage and into the basement. For this part of the basement, I have selected through-body porcelain tile. This tile specifically has a wood look. Wood-look tiles are not always my favorite, but this one has a whitewash look. You can see the wood grain on it and tell that it is trying to be wood by the size, but the coloring is not going to look fake or manufactured because it obviously is not a true wood color.
The through-body porcelain is as hard of a surface that we can put in space like this. It is going to hold up to salt and dirt and all the things that Utah weather is going to bring it in through the garage and into the basement.
BATHROOM
For the bathroom, I’ve selected a Carrara marble mosaic. This basket weave pattern has a lot of historical reference and is something we commonly see in homes from the twenties. This basket weave tile has a gray dot instead of a black dot. The gray dot is a little softer, a little less high contrast.
Being in line with the historical nature of this home, I’ve gone back to the traditional 3” x 6” ceramic subway in white for the shower wall tile. To be interesting and more youthful, I selected Benjamin Moore Cheating Heart as the vanity color. This is a nice, soft gray-black, and it’s one of my all-time favorite colors for cabinetry. The wall paint will be Benjamin Moore Classic Gray and all of our trim will be in Chantilly Lace. These are appealing, safe colors. They’re bright and airy for a basement with not a ton of light as well as warm and timeless.
Thanks for tuning in today to hear about all the basement finishes. I look forward to the completion of this house in the spring of 2020. I can’t wait to share it with you!
